Are you looking for the perfect shower gift? This delicate corner-to-corner blankie even comes with instructions for swaddling. The pattern originally appeared in Heavenly Angels In Need’s 2008 Spring/Summer Newsletter.

Finished Size: 18” x 18” (preemie), 36” x 36” (baby)

Skill Level: Easy.

Materials:

  • MC: 400 yd (preemie size) or 1550 yd (baby size) 2/sport-weight yarn
  • CC: 75 yd (preemie size) or 275 yd (baby size) 2/sport-weight yarn
  • Size H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle

Optional:

  • 1/4” ribbon in coordinating color
  • 1 sheet cardstock-weight paper
  • hole puncher

Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger size in parentheses. To avoid confusion, it may be helpful to circle the numbers corresponding to your size before beginning this project. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.

Blankie

Worked from corner to corner.

With MC, ch 6.

Row 1. Dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch. 3 dc.

Row 2. Ch 6; turn. Dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch; beg shell made. Skip next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp; shell made. 2 shells.

Row 3.  Ch 6; turn. Dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch; beg shell made. *Skip next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp; shell made. Rep from * across. 3 shells.

Rows 4-27 (4-54).  Rep row 3. 27 (54) shells.

Row 28 (55).  Ch 1; turn. Sl st in first 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in first ch-3 sp; beg shell made. *Skip next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp; shell made. Rep from * across to last ch-3 sp; sl st in last ch-3 sp. 26 (53) shells.

Rows 29-44 (56-89).  Rep row 28 (55). 10 (19) shells.

Change to CC.

Rows 45-52 (90-106). Rep row 28 (55). 2 shells.

Row 53 (107). Ch 1; turn. Sl st in first 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in first ch-3 sp; beg shell made. Sl st in last ch-3 sp. 1 shell.

Finish off.

Hood

Worked from top down.

With CC, ch 6.

Rows 1-2. Worked as rows 1-2 of Blankie.

Row 3. Ch 6; turn. Dc in fourth ch from hook and next 2 ch; beg shell made. *Skip next 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp; shell made. Rep from * across. 3 shells.

Rows 4-9 (4-18). Rep row 3. 9 (18) shells.

Finish off.

Finishing

Sew hood to colored corner of blankie, lining up edges and leaving diagonal edge open.

Edging

Join CC in any ch-3 sp on edge. Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp; shell made. *Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp; rep from * around. Join with sl st in first ch-3 sp. Finish off. Weave in all ends.

Swaddling Instructions

If desired, print and cut out Swaddling Instructions. Punch hole in dotted line and tie to blankie with ribbon.
