Kid’s Cosplay Hat

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Earlier this month Little Lovely went to her very first Comic Con with her daddy, and because we are that family, she went in full cosplay.

Daddy is a retro video games collector, so it’s only fitting that she would go as Amy Rose from the old Sonic the Hedgehog games. The dress was a plain red tutu with white ribbon sewn around the edge. The glasses were novelty 80s glasses onto which I painted the eyes. The boot covers were from Etsy. And the hat, of course, was designed by me especially for this occasion.

While it was intended as a hedgehog hat, one of our friends pointed out that it could also be used to dress up as Mew from Pokemon, so I’m just going to call this an all-purpose Kid’s Cosplay Hat.

Size: One size fits most. Little Lovely was 2 years old at the time of the photo, but the same hat also fit her adult male father comfortably.

Ear Flaps

Each ear flap is worked over 12 stitches, offset by 9 stitches from the Brow.

Left Ear Flap

With RS facing, skip next 9 un-worked dc in last rnd of Hat to the left of the Brow. Join Color A with sl st in next dc.

Row 1. Ch 2 (does not count as dc), dc in next 9 dc, dc2tog over next 2 dc; leave rem dc un-worked. 10 st.

Assembly

With wrong sides together, place one ear in Color B on top of one ear in Color A. With Color A, sc evenly around edge of both ears to “sew” them together. Repeat with remaining 2 ears. Sew both ears to top of Hat.

Edging

Join Color A with sl st anywhere in edge of Hat. Ch 1; sc evenly around bottom of Hat, Ear Flaps, and Brow. Join with sl st to first sc; finish off.

Braids – make 2.

For each braid, cut six 36-inch lengths of yarn in Color A and three 36-inch lengths of yarn in Color C. Holding all the yarns together, pull them through the point of one Ear Flap. Pull the ends of the yarn so that they line up evenly on either side of the Ear Flap. Braid the yarns together and tie the braid at the end. Trim the ends of the braid evenly. Repeat for the other Ear Flap.
