Work desired number of beginning chains.
Shown:  5 chains.
Join with slip stitch to first chain made.
   
You now have a ring of chains in which to begin your first
round.
Begin the first round with a starting chain (the equivalent of a
turning chain) to match the height of the stitches in the round.
Shown:  3 chains.
   
Work the first stitch into the center of the ring created by the
beginning chains.
Work each subsequent stitch in the first round into the center
of the beginning chain ring.
Shown:   10 double crochets.
   
Join with slip stitch to top of starting chain.
Round 1 is complete.
